How the G20 can accelerate sustainable energy transitions in the power sector

The covid-19 pandemic highlights how important it is for humans to live more in harmony with nature. We can proactively improve our resilience to major shocks and take advantage of opportunities to seed a green economic recovery. Doing so would tackle, in an integrated manner, the climate, biodiversity, health and economic crises.

At Earth Matters, we are working with businesses and governments on new priority areas such as the development of green stimulus packages, sustainable food security, air quality and human health, addressing climate change risks and protecting natural habitats and the services they provide to us.

In September 2020, I along with our Associate Consultant, Dr Mari Luomi, had published a policy brief by Think20, as part of the G20 presidency of Saudi Arabia. The brief makes recommendations to G20 governments on how to support businesses in the energy transition to address climate change goals and assist with recovery from covid-19. We ask for the G20 to create an integrated taskforce comprised of businesses, governments, civil society and academia. We also recommended the importance of growing the green, transitioning the brown and transforming the rest.

Watch this space for a webinar that will discuss the recommendations with businesses and governments ahead of the G20 Summit in November 2020. A special thanks to our co-authors from Colorado State University, Harvard University and the Asian Development Bank Institute.
