  • Earth Matters built a new partnership in 2021 with PwC Middle-East, and has been appointed to provide advice on ESG matters and support them with their clients in the region.

  • Subject matter expertise and project management to create an environment strategy for a major new development on the Red Sea and a capital city in the GCC region

  • Preparing a report on Masdar’s renewable energy desalination programme and creation of strategic reports on commercial deployment as a water innovation park

Supporting the European Commission

We continue to support the European Commission this year on their strategic engagement on climate change with the GCC region. We convene events and training workshops on climate change and economic diversification with Saudi Arabia and other GCC states. We also represent the Network on a regional carbon pricing working group, comprised of businesses, government and NGOs EU-GCC Clean Energy Technology Network

Strategic environmental advisory services for Beacon Development Company, the consultancy arm of the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology. We are creating a toolkit to integrate the use of ecosystem service assessments and habitat risks assessments of the concept master planning process for the Red Sea Development Company. 


Lead consultant for UNEP

Lead consultant for UNEP developing a policy brief on urban adaptation to climate change in the West Asia Region. Policy brief will outline the potential of nature based solutions in the 12 countries of the region, three case studies of cities that are particularly vulnerable to climate change and make policy recommendations for decision makers. 


Study on climate change

We led a study on climate change governance, institutional architecture and opportunities for cooperation with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The work was done for the “Strategic Partnerships for the Implementation of the Paris Agreement (SPIPA)” programme, the European Union, the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety (BMU), and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.  Research was conducted into International formal and informal actors on climate change, including powerplay and how to engage them. 


Climate Change Convenor for EU-GCC Clean Energy Technology Network

EU-GCC

Climate change Convener for the EU-GCC Clean Energy Technology Network, an initiative sponsored/funded by the European Commission. We convene events and training workshops on climate change and economic diversification with Saudi Arabia and other GCC states. Also we represent the Network on a regional carbon pricing working group comprised of businesses, government and NGOs. 


THINK20 (T20) policy brief

Co-lead author for a policy brief for the Think 20 Saudi Arabia, as part of official G20 series of publications. Authors were from North America, Middle-East and Asia.  Published by Task Force 2 (Climate Change & Environment), the brief includes a series of recommendations for G20 governments to help accelerate the energy transition in the power sector and secure a greener economic recovery from COVID-19. 


Strategy research and advisory

Strategic advisory services for ENGIE Middle-East, South & Central Asia and Turkey office on climate change risks, resilience and zero carbon transition for business and operations in the region. Developed and moderated event at the 24th World Energy Congress in Abu Dhabi on Sustainable Finance and Carbon Markets in the GCC.

Strategic advice and partnership on identifying the potential for blue carbon project and investment in Gulf region and implementation of a pilot study to plant mangroves using drones. 


Climate experts for the UK PACT programme

We are registered climate experts for the UK PACT (Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions) programme, which is a £60million technical assistance programme. UK PACT shares low carbon skills and expertise and early activities are focused in China, Colombia, Mexico, South Africa and Malaysia.

Dubai’s climate change adaption strategy

Developing Dubai’s climate change adaptation strategy, in support of Deltares, Dubai Municipality and the Executive Council of Dubai, as part of Dubai’s commitment to the global C40 Cities Network.

Leading development of climate change risk and adaptation assessment for energy, food security and financial services for Dubai as well as local stakeholder engagement and capacity building. 


EDA working paper

Co-authored a peer reviewed working paper: ‘Engaging Gulf Non-state and Subnational Actors in Implementing the Paris Agreement’.

The study puts forward a series of action-oriented recommendations for both GCC non-state and subnational actors and governments.

Distant Imagery Solutions utilises imagery to collect environmental information and assist conservation. Their innovation arm develops drones and underwater ROV technologies and tools to better assess and collect data in the field. Earth Matters and Distant Imagery have formed a strategic alliance in environmental related imagery and video capture, and analysis and restoration of coastal habitats and ecosystems.
